Aircraft Maintenance Technician Career Path: Entry to DOM
The A&P certificate is just the beginning. Aviation maintenance offers a clearly defined career ladder from entry-level mechanic all the way to Director of Maintenance (DOM). Each rung brings more responsibility, more pay, and more authority.

The Career Ladder
Level 1: Entry-Level A&P Mechanic
Experience: 0–2 years Salary: $42,000–$60,000 Typical Roles: Line mechanic, shop mechanic, general aviation mechanic
What you do:
- Perform routine scheduled maintenance
- Complete assigned work orders
- Work under supervision of lead mechanics
- Learn company procedures, specific aircraft types, and systems
- Build your skills and reputation
Level 2: Journeyman Mechanic
Experience: 3–5 years Salary: $58,000–$80,000 Typical Roles: Systems specialist, troubleshooter, experienced line/heavy mechanic
What you do:
- Work independently on complex maintenance tasks
- Troubleshoot system discrepancies without hand-holding
- Train newer mechanics
- Develop expertise in specific systems or aircraft types
Level 3: Lead Mechanic / Crew Lead
Experience: 5–10 years Salary: $75,000–$105,000
What you do:
- Supervise a team of 3–10 mechanics
- Coordinate work assignments and task priority
- Interface with planning, engineering, and quality departments
- Ensure work is completed safely, on time, and to standard
- First-line management responsibilities
Level 4: Inspector / Quality Assurance
Experience: 7–15 years Salary: $80,000–$115,000
What you do:
- Perform RII (Required Inspection Items) sign-offs
- Conduct in-process and final inspections on maintenance work
- Verify compliance with ADs, maintenance manuals, and SBs
- Review documentation for accuracy and completeness

Level 5: Maintenance Manager / Maintenance Control
Experience: 10–20 years Salary: $95,000–$140,000
What you do:
- Manage an entire shift, hangar, or maintenance station
- Budget management and resource allocation
- Hiring, training, and performance management
- Interface with FAA inspectors and regulatory compliance
- Coordinate with flight operations and dispatch
Level 6: Director of Maintenance (DOM)
Experience: 15–25+ years Salary: $120,000–$180,000+
The DOM is responsible for the entire maintenance program of an air carrier or operator. Under 14 CFR Part 119/121/135, the DOM must be designated by name to the FAA.
What you do:
- Oversee the continuous airworthiness maintenance program (CAMP)
- Ensure regulatory compliance across the entire organization
- Report directly to senior leadership/CEO
- Interface with the FAA's CHDO (Certificate Holding District Office)
- Set maintenance policies and procedures
- Budget authority for the entire maintenance department
