Aviation hiring managers review hundreds of resumes for every open position, and the difference between landing an interview and being passed over often comes down to how effectively you present your qualifications. Whether you're an A&P mechanic, airline pilot, or avionics technician, your resume needs to speak the language of aviation while following modern hiring practices that get past applicant tracking systems.

Start with a clear professional summary that states your certification level, total experience, and specialty areas in two to three sentences. For mechanics, lead with your certificate type (A&P, IA), total airframe hours, and primary aircraft experience. Pilots should list total time, PIC time, and type ratings prominently. Avoid generic objective statements and instead focus on what you bring to the specific employer, referencing the job posting's key requirements.

Quantify your accomplishments wherever possible. Mechanics should highlight specific inspection types, NDT methods, and aircraft systems expertise. Pilots should include fleet types, departure airports, and any special qualifications like CAT III autoland or ETOPS experience. Specific numbers give hiring managers confidence in your experience level.

Tailor each application to the specific position. Study the job posting carefully and mirror its language and requirements in your resume. If the posting emphasizes turbine engine experience, ensure your Pratt & Whitney or CFM56 work is prominently featured. Include relevant training, software proficiency (AMOS, TRAX, Corridor), and any safety or quality awards. Keep the format clean with consistent fonts, clear section headers, and enough white space to ensure readability during a 30-second initial screening.
